Adolescent Treatment

Adolescence is the most common time for orthodontic treatment, typically between the ages of 10 and 15 years when most or all of the adult teeth have erupted into the mouth. At this point, crooked teeth, extra spaces, and improper bites can be easily detected and addressed. Because these issues do not correct themselves, once enough of the adult teeth have made it into the mouth we can begin the treatment process without delay. Additionally, by starting at this age we can take advantage of less dense bone of the jaws and patient growth to aid us in resolving issues easier and more effectively than in adulthood.

Because adolescence is such a common age for braces or Invisalign aligners, many patients have already seen their classmates or relatives in treatment and, if not excited for the process, are much more willing to accept and cooperate with the plan. At this age, choosing colors for the braces gives some added fun to each appointment and patients will often run into their friends and classmates in the office for their appointments as well. By starting in adolescence, we can more easily reach the goals of many to be done with braces before the high school years as well.
